Double Take

[.. June 30th, 2001 // Sometime, Somewhere ..]

[.. Another promo by Montrose... another fucking literal view of my world... another boring, predictable, idiotic promo. ..]

[.. Wow... a radio show. Montrose does a radio show. I did one of those once... yesterday, in fact... ..]

[.. Ever have a case of deja vu? ..]

[.. Ever have a case of deja vu? ..]

[.. You know... you see something that reminds you of this time, something you think you saw before. Usually you check things out again. You do a double take... you look twice. The opposite of deja vu is jamais vu... where nothing is familiar. It's something you never expected. ..]

[.. You know, the opposite of a Montrose promo. ..]

[.. Ever have a case of jamais vu? They'll make you do a double take too. ..]

[.. Do a double take. ..]

[.. June 30th, 2001 // 1:30 AM // Outside The Radio Station ..]

[.. The glass door swings open to the radio station where Michael Trey and Claire Matthews have just finished their radio show for the HWF. Claire runs to go get the car, and Michael stands on the curb... alone. With his thoughts. ..]

Big day coming... big day coming up tomorrow. Big day on Sunday.

I've got to start getting into the wrestling midset, preparing for Wrestling God tomorrow. Fuck... that's gonna be cutting it short, flying out there for that.

But it's not like that will be a problem. I'm matched against Montrose... the tournament's village idiot.

Every place has at least one.

You know... those guys that can't figure out what people really mean.

If you believe in evolution, you at least can be comforted in the concept of "survival of the fittest". That the strongest and smartest will survive. Montrose might be physically strong... but mentally? Emotionally?

It's a small comfort to know that some day, Montrose will remove himself from the gene pool.

He can't even understand what I mean. I say that his problem is that he needs a good punch to the chin, and he thinks I mean that he needs a good punch to the chin... if you he had listened to me in context.

I meant that he, along with a lot of other people... need a fucking wake up call.

The kid sits there and uses his promo to pour out his sob story, his poor-little-kid routine. You know... the one that every wrestler seems to have. Unorinality again... damnit. So he sits there and pours that out, and then he didn't even understand why I did it.

Perhaps he didn't take the time to think that it was to show him that he's nothing special?

He's not different?

He's sure as hell not... unique?

I can only downgrade him so much. While he has the slightest bit of talent, it just isn't enough. Overcoming all odds in the past won't help him tomorrow. And it just might be a sad thing to send him packing from the tournament.

It'll be the loss of our village idiot. That's not cool.

If only I had someone here to talk about all this... Montrose is on my mind, and I can't even make fun of him properly.

Then again, they say that you are your own best audience.

Nah Nah Nah Nah... Montrose Sucks.

Nope... it's just not as fun.

Face it, the guy is... subpar. He's an indy worker.

So am I... but I'm good at it...

He is awfully big though. Maybe I should think about some strategy. Take him off his feet, keep him on the move, use my lightning quick speed and my hardcore nature to bring him down. That's it.

Maybe I should think about something important, like my HWF match.

But then I'm not concentrating on my FIRST match... and as bad as wrestling Montrose is, the only thing that could be worse is losing.

If you don't believe in evolution, then we're pretty much screwed aren't we? Although... Montrose has shown no signs of working on his twelve step program.

I'm on my path towards salvation. Are you?

That'd make a good Christian television commercial.

I miss my journal... I wish it was here so I could write these thoughts down. Then, maybe, I could psychoanalyze Montrose. Figure out the real reasons why he is the way that he is. Big. Dumb. Determined. Stubborn-headed. Boring.

I guess it won't really matter after Saturday, right? It'll just be the two of us left in the right, and then one of us will advance.

I wonder if I'm really regarded as a "favorite" against him. It'd surprise me. After all...

He beat the "great" Billy Ray of IWO!

Yeah?

FUCK IWO!

And while we're at it, FUCK DWF!

Face it, they're both just two more federations trying to go pro, two more federations that are nothing more than just a copy of a copy of a copy.

A third edition wonder.

Amatuer wrestling, ver. 3.0

Where did Claire go? Damn, this is taking a long time.

I wonder if they'll have breakfast on the flight.

Probably not.

I need my nutrients to fight Montrose! I need my vitamins and milk! I need to HULK... ME UP! I need to study, I need to plan, I need to get inside the guy's mind... if there is such a thing.

He wants to become a Wrestling God. As though it's even a possibility.

God help us if Montrose was crowned a God... Wrestling God, but it's the thought that makes me shudder.

*shudder*

Hey, I'm glad Montrose gave us all that update on WWF, by the way. I'd hate to be left out in the cold, not knowing the newest information on the World Wrestling Federation.

You know, being a wrestler and all.

It'd be a surprise if people already knew all that information he gave us.

You know, I'd hate to think he wasted his time.

Or that he just did it to blow some more smoke.

Act a little bigger.

A little tougher.

A little dumber.

Yeah, that sounds like Montrose. Making a big production out of something we don't care about. Something that doesn't affect the present, that doesn't affect Wrestling God. Something that I don't give a damn about. Something that unimpresses me. Something that...

... that, you know... isn't that good.

He really isn't all that intelligent. I mean... I warn him about showing up prepared, and he asks if I know his statistics. His numbers.

As though numbers mean a thing.

As though it matters that he's in DWF or some other damn federation.

As though knowing someone's height, weight, and serial number actually mean you know everything about the person. As though he actually KNOWS me.

The poor, literal bastard.

Because my point all along has been that I'll never fully know Montrose as anything more than a set of numbers, and neither will he know me. That's way it should be. Just two wrestlers, fighting to see who is the best. The smartest. And for that kind of a match, I am prepared.

I can beat Montrose.

But it's not like that will be a problem. I'm matched against Montrose... the tournament's village idiot.

Every place has at least one.

You know... those guys that can't figure out what people really mean.

I think I just had a case of deja vu.... wierd.

Then again, I've heard that history repeats itself... that can't bode well for Montrose. I always come out on top. I always get the last work. I always emerge as the victor.

It's called determination. I've got it, he doesn't, and it's the difference between us. He has made himself excuses to lose, I've made myself reasons to win.

You'd think that it's clear who the victor is, wouldn't you?

You'd think so.

Where the hell is Claire?! ... there she is. It's been like half an hour!

[.. And then Michael checks his watch and realizes that it's only been five minutes. ..]

It's gonna be a long plane ride.

CLAIRE MATTHEWS: You want to drive?

MICHAEL TREY: Yeah, sounds okay. Slide over.

[.. Claire moves over for Michael and he starts the parked car up once again. He just sits there though, not pulling away. ..]

CLAIRE MATTHEWS: Everything all right?

MICHAEL TREY: Yeah, I was just thinking about Montrose again.

CLAIRE MATTHEWS: Oh God, here we go again.

MICHAEL TREY: No... I'm not going to bother you with it. I... it just sort of hit me.

CLAIRE MATTHEWS: What did?

MICHAEL TREY: The thought that he might beat me.

CLAIRE MATTHEWS: That's rediculous.

MICHAEL TREY: I guess so. But not impossible... nothing is impossible, right?

[.. AHHHH! KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! Michael and Claire jump about six feet in the air. Someone is at the window. An older man. Dark hair. Mid-40's. Familiar... deja vu, but not quite. Michael rolls the window down and looks out at the man strangely... wistfully... painfully.. Claire looks across the vehicle. ..]

CLAIRE MATTHEWS: Excuse me, sir... do we know you?

[.. The man ignores her... and stares at Michael. Smiling. ..]

MAN: Michael...

[.. Michael just searches the man's eyes... wondering... hoping... dreaming... dying... PRAYING... ..]

MICHAEL TREY: ... Dad?

[.. June 30th, 2001 // Sometime, Somewhere ..]

[.. It's called deja vu... when you see something you'd swear you've seen before. ..]

[.. It's called jamais vu... when you see something you've never seen before. ..]

[.. It's called deja vu... when you see something you'd swear you've seen before. ..]

[.. Either way... it'll make you do a double take. ..]

[.. So before you think that you know me, Montrose, maybe you should think about that. Seeing things you'd never believe in your wildest dreams. That's what I am going through right now. I have more to fight for than ever. I'm gaining things I had never imagined. Slowly but surely, I'm digging myself out of his hole. I'm taking my steps towards personal salvation. I'm... completing my story. ..]

[.. This is my story. ..]

[.. Presented by someone that cares... Sponsored by something you thought you'd never see... Brought to you by my reality. ..]

[.. Don't blink. ..]

[.. You might miss it. ..]
